Problem
State the problem the research addresses and its relevance
The reason for research is often some practical problem or benefit, e. g. cancer research is based on the problem of cancer, though one can also address "pure" theoretical problems. The advantage of stating a practical problem with real world impacts is that it can agitate and activate people to do something about it. So by highlighting a problem you attract attention, invoke reader interest, and activate people. If there is no problem, why is this research being done? Stating the problem your research addresses is a natural start point that answers the reader question: "Why should I bother reading this?"
