Precedence
Find and recognize especially those whose research directly precedes your work
Given the amount of research done, it is likely that something similar has been done earlier. If this is not noted, it shows that you are unfamiliar with the field! It is also good to give no credit to those who have gone before you. Finding similar work is also helpful, as you can use the same methods, or avoid their errors. A good strategy for new researchers is to find a good precedence paper and follow or learn from its methods. One also needs to be sure of exactly how this research adds to or builds on the precedence, i.e. there must be an original contribution. As Newton's said: "If I have seen further than others, it is because I have stood on the shoulders of giants."
